or sometimes if a dog sees an intruder outside and can't get to them (could be a human or a squirrel or some such) and is frustrated they will take their anger out on the nearest thing they can rip up. We used to give our dog tennis balls to chew on. When we were home and he started barking at a noise outside we'd say, get your tennis ball and he'd run for it and chem ferociously for about ten minutes and then calm down. When we left our home we always placed tennis balls around the home out in the open in every room, they were always moved to another location when we got back, thank goodness for the tennis balls.

Punishing you for not giving him/her enough attention. when they destroy something they may not get positive attention but they get some attention.
